Dimethyl ether is simplest ether as the chemical structure of CH3OCH3. DME is a colorless, non-toxic liquid when it is pressurized. It is known as a Freon-free propellant and refrigerant for spray can and the refrigeration system, respectively. Besides used in gas turbines for power generation, DME is also used as a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) substitute and transportation fuel since its properties are similar to those of propane which is the main chemical in LPG. The comparison of the physical properties between DME and other fuels was shown in Table below.
